The concept of film was renewed by web technologies and interactive projection
The concept of film was renewed by web technologies and interactive interfaces. The linearity of the story has been replaced by notions of choice and navigation into the story. Everybody knows webdocs. Artists as well as media seized them to reflect our fragmented and intricate reality. In real life, some artists have invented different ways of intervention, like Jeffrey Shaw, famous for pioneering the use of digital media within virtual, cinematographic, interactive and expanded environments.
Digital Stories, a project by Rencontres audiovisuelles, is dedicated to this second aspect. They manage to adapt web interactivity at a cinema scale. At first, they work on a laser technology that allows the spectator to point his choices on the screen, to lead the scenario. This process has been tested during experimental projections.
In a second time, artists and developers met during residences to make artworks dedicated to this kind of technology. To date, different kinds of projects were led: short films, video games, mapping…
1minute69, a french collective, made a huge interactive projection in which the laser pointer works as an extension of the spectator body. The spectator is invited to manipulate images and participate to a unique creation, specific to this public and this moment. The main differences between web and "real life" experiences is the immersion and the collective emotion.
